Sea Fishing Rods

The type of fishing rod you'll need will depend on the type of fishing your hoping to undertake. The type of rod used for a pier fishing session compared to a beach fishing session will vary.

When your pier fishing a  10 to 12 foot rod with a strong tc will be able to cope with most fish you'll be catching, as the water around a pier is typically deep (especially at high tides) you may prefer to opt for a shorter rod and go for the ten foot option these rods will help you especially if the pier area is busy with people.

Beach fishing needs a minimum of a 12 foot rod simple because you need to reach distances with this style of fishing. These rods are specific for the job and are called beach casters, they are designed to cast a 6oz lead 100's of yards when kitted out with the right type of reels.

For boat fishing you rod will only need to be about 8 feet long as you'll be fishing in must deeper water with no casting required. The rig and line is simply dropped over the side and lowered to the bottom.

Sea fishing Reels

Fishing reels are a personal preference but the type of fishing your doing will have some bearing on your choice. Fixed spool reels are the easiest to begin with but if your a more experienced angler you may decide to use a multiplier reel with your rod set up, these give you good distance when casting and good retrieve rate.

Reels vary in sizes and features but make sure you buy the correct one for the job for example a boat fishing multiplier is very different from a beach casting multiplier so the right reel is important.

Fishing Line

The sea environment can be punishing on sea fishing line so do not buy cheap when you buy as you may pay in lost fish, you need the ensure good abrasion resistance for the line you choose.

also consider the type of casting you'll be doing and buy a suitable shock leader if you beach fishing.

A shock leader is a length of between 10feet and 15feet of line attached to your main line, this is designed to take the "sting" out of the cast for your main line and ensures the "shock" is absorbed. Shock leaders are typically 10lbs heavier in breaking strain for the shock absorption you'll need

Travelling in and around Ireland

Ireland is a great tourist destination. For such a small island nation (84,421 sq km, and population around 6 million) it has a great diversity of activities to keep even the most discerning traveller occupied for the duration of their stay.

It is a lush green country, with a central plain surrounded by low mountains around the coast. It has a temperate climate without extremes of heat or cold.

On the right is a map of Ireland showing the county divisions. If you are planning a trip to Ireland, or if you are already there, but plan to travel around it, then a very good site to visit is www.mapofireland.ie This site is a mine of information on things to do in Ireland, and is divided into a county by county listing of the main attractions throughout the island, complete with interactive maps showing how to get to your chosen destination.

The site contains information on area and population of each county, a video showing lots of the main sights to be enjoyed throughout Ireland, maps of the counties, road and rail maps, and a separate section devoted to each county, giving details of the cultural, heritage, historical, scenic and sporting attractions.

It contains information on Ireland’s 3 UNESCO Heritage sites – Bru na Boinne including Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth burial chambers in Meath, Skellig Michael an island off the Kerry coast, and the Giant’s Causeway volcanic formation in County Antrim. Also there is information on Ireland’s most visited attractions, including the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and Bunratty Castle in County Clare, Blarney Castle in Cork, the Aran Islands off Galway’s coast, Guinness Storehouse, and the Book of Kells in Dublin, Killarney Lakes, and the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry.
